Menu: Global

The Global menu is designed for tasks related with the geometry of the structure that is being studied. It has the following submenus:

Undo

It’s the same as typing CTRL-Z and is used to delete the last action when editing the structure.

Redo

It’s the same as typing CTRL-SHIFT-Z and is used to recover the last deleted action when editing the structure.

Back to Initial form

BackInitialFormThis menu is the same as the buttonback that is shown on the left hand side button column. This image is visible if:

  1. Screen resolution is enough to show all the buttons on the left column of buttons.
  2. WinTess is in Analysis State (not in Form Finding or Patterning)
  3. The structure is deformed: Initial form is not equal to Final Form.

If these three conditions are true, when we click this menu (or the button on the left column), the structure will revert to the Initial Form (after a confirming pop-up window)

General data

general-dataIt shows a message window in which there is a numerical summary of the elements or objects that form the structure. It is occasionally useful to check that there are not missing or too many objects. This menu can be activated with the F4 key.

It is automatically shown when opening an existing file.

Origin of coordinates

center-of-coordinatesWith this menu we can relocate the origin of coordinates to any of the nodes of the structure. It is a convenient and quick way to change the origin of coordinates, but does not allow to take it to an arbitrary location. It must be a node. If we want the origin of coordinates to any arbitrary location, we can do this in one of two ways:

  1. Creating a node there and then use this menu.

  2. Using the menu which it will be discussed below: translation, rotation, and scaling

Traslation, rotation and scaling

translation-rotationDo not confuse this menu with rotation, displacement (panning) or zoom which we can do at any time on the main screen. What we change there is just the view of the object, not the object itself. However, through this menu we modify the coordinates of the nodes of the object.

With the translation we move the location of the object in space.
With the rotation, we rotate around axes X, Y and Z.

Finally with the scaling, we modify the dimensions. We can do this two ways:

1. all three axes at the same time, by checking the corresponding box (produces proportional scaling)
2. a different value for each axis (produces deformed scaling)

Present symmetry >> New structure

This menu is active only if we are seeing a picture and its symmetry on the screen. In this case, we use this menu for WinTess3 to create a new structure formed by the current structure and its symmetry as shown on the screen. The program will take care of generating new objects, eliminating duplications and adapting the characteristics of objects and their displacement to the used planes of symmetry.

Current form >> Initial form

This is a very unusual menu. In general it is reserved to advanced users.
Through it you can transform the deformed structure (deformed by any means) in a new structure, the initial form of which is the current form.
Practically it is a complement when Form Finding is special cases.
