Tensile Architecture (also called in other forms: Tensile structures, Textile architecture, Tensostructuras, etc.) is a type of architecture where most of the structural elements are subjected to tensile stress.
To withstand this type of tensile stress, we usually use the following structural elements:
Linear : Strings, ropes, cables, tendons, belts, etc.
Surface : Canvases, membranes, fabrics, films, foils, etc.
But, there is not only tensile stress. Often tensile stresses do not go directly to the fixed supports: Foundations, anchors, etc. , but in fact are balanced by other elements that support compressions (masts, arches… ) or bending moments (beams, arches… ).
The origin of this type of architecture is very old, millenary, if we consider the nomadic constructions of all times, or the textile accessories in buildings of all kinds: shades, protection from rain, etc.
This type of design usually requires special knowledge, both in the design phase and during implementation. And much of this knowledge finds great support in the specific software.
